Tips for Moving With Young Children

Are you planning to move to a new home soon? Moving can be a headache for anyone, but moving with small children is even more difficult. Little ones often have fears about moving and feel anxiety about leaving their old house behind. Whether you're moving across town or across the country, these four moving tips can make the transition easier for your young children.

    Keep Track of Special Items

Does your child have a special stuffed animal or blanket? The last thing you want to do is lose these treasured items in a move, so take extra care to keep track of them. Consider packing special items in your child's suitcase or backpack to keep them from getting lost. Your child will also benefit from having their favorite comfort item close at hand during the move.

    Let the Kids Help Pack

Children often feel a loss of control during a move, so let them participate as much as possible. Your child can help pack boxes and get all their belongings ready for professional movers like Asheville Moving Company to pick up and take out to the truck. Helping with the packing and moving process can ease your little one's fears by assuring them that nothing will get left behind.

    Avoid Other Big Changes

Is it time for your child to move from a crib to a bed or start potty training? Consider delaying these transitions until after your family is settled in your new home. Making too many changes at one time can be stressful for small children and interfere with learning a new skill. Your child may even reject sleeping alone or using the toilet for months or years if it becomes associated with a traumatic event.

    Unpack Kids' Rooms First

The last thing you want is bored children underfoot while you're trying to move into a new home. Bring your kids' furniture and belongings in first. Having children work on unpacking and arranging their own rooms while the grownups work on the rest of the house will keep them occupied and out of the way. They can also play with their favorite toys and books and sleep in their own beds when they get tired.

If your young child has a hard time adjusting to your family's new home, remember to be patient and give them time. Help your child feel more at home by letting them choose a new wall color or bedding for their room, and personalize their space with favorite photos and art.
