Is Your Home Safe for Your Kids? How to Child-Proof Your Home Windows

By Friends of Real MommaOctober 16, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

Your home, it's the place where you feel comfortable, safe, and protected. You want the best safety for your family, including your children, but did you know that many children tend to fall from windows every year?

You want to keep your kids safe and away from this kind of danger, so here are some steps to child-proof your home windows for maximum security for your kids and maximum peace of mind for you.

    Childproof Window Locks

We all know that locking windows is the best way to keep strangers out and children in. That said, look into installing childproof window locks. These can be found at your local home improvement store or online. They sell all kinds of locks, even some for sliding glass windows.

    Childproof Window Guards

These guards are created from metal or aluminum and are fixed and mounted on a window opening to prevent falls. Many are also constructed from aluminum mesh. These products can be easily purchased online or at your local home improvement store.

    Childproof Window Stops

These window stops are actually window guards that screw into the side of a window frame. They have bars about four inches apart to help keep children from falling out of windows. These stops can be purchased as well at your local home improvement store or look for them online.

    Residential Window Tinting

Residential window tinting is a process in which a film is installed on your window. Many times, it will eliminate dangerous glass shards from window breakage, glass impacts, or explosions. Installing residential window tinting on your windows can help keep your child safe from deadly cuts that cut glass can inflict. Tinted windows can even prevent harmful UV rays from entering your home.

    Childproof Window Blinds

It is common for children to get injured when playing near blinds without supervision. You can, however, replace these blinds with cord-free window shades which can be purchased both on and offline.

    Talk to Your Child

Is your child old enough to understand how windows can be dangerous? If so, talk to them. Help them understand how dangerous being near windows can be, especially on an upstairs floor. Teaching them how to stay safe will help prevent them from getting into any window-related accidents.

    Other things to consider:

Make sure to keep window areas free from furniture. Furniture is a climbing hazard to kids, and furniture against windows only furthers that danger.

Don't leave children unattended. Especially very young children. The more we interact with our children and keep them attended to, the more they understand the dangers of everyday objects like windows.

Examine your windows frequently for breaks or for locks that aren't working.

Being smart about window safety will keep your family safe when it comes to being around windows. You never know when an accident will occur, being proactive helps you and your kids live a happy and safe life at home whether enjoying bird watching or a breeze on a cool day. Windows can be a source of pleasure. Let's keep them that way for you and your kids!
