Want to Buy a Fixer-Upper Home? 4 Problems You Can Easily Remedy

By Friends of Real MommaDecember 30, 20171 Comment3 Mins Read

How do you know what projects are easy to tackle as DIY options, and which ones need the help of an expert? Do you want to customize an old home and make it your own? We have four projects that you should have no problem taking on and will improve the look of your new home.

    Filling All the Nail Holes

Do you want to spend your hard earned cash to have someone come and fill tons of little nail holes? You can easily do the tedious work and save yourself hundreds of dollars in the process. This Old House says projects that provide the best return on investment include drywall repairs, painting, and sanding hardwood floors.

Adding a Fresh Coat of Paint

Remember that your fixer-upper needs some TLC. The easiest and most inexpensive way to improve your home appeal and boost value is to paint your home inside and out. On the outside, any cracked or peeling paint needs scraping and repainting.

Inside, each room should get a new coat in a timeless, neutral tone that lets possible buyers imagine themselves in the space. Using premier paint options from Koontz Hardware or a similar company near you gives you more bang for your buck because you do not have to use multiple layers and you can paint less often.

    Replace Windows for Energy Savings

Do you or someone you know have the skills to replace old windows? If so, then you can save yourself thousands of dollars in heating and cooling costs by swapping out old, leaky windows for new models with higher energy ratings. When you have too little experience, then you can always caulk the windows until you get someone to swap them out for you. Recycled windows are an excellent option if you want to go a more environmentally friendly route.

    Demolition Savings

Did you hire a contractor to gut your kitchen and upgrade it? Save yourself some of the repair costs by doing the demo yourself. Have a demolition party and invite friends and family over to knock out walls, take down cabinets, and remove broken fixtures. Doing the manual labor in this situation will help reduce the cost of repairs, saving you money in the long run.

When you choose to remodel a home, experts suggest that you carefully consider the skills and talent you have before deciding to buy. When you pick an option where you can do most of the physical work, then you can save thousands of dollars in repair costs. Consider options that net the highest returns for the best results.

I never had thought about recycled windows but that could be a good option. Brand new windows are so expensive.
