Did you know that Fire Prevention Week starts on Oct. 6th? My husband is a fire fighter and realizing the risk he puts himself in to save others is sometimes scary. I wouldn't have it any other way though because we need people just like him in our lives in case of emergency, and if he has the opportunity to save one life or a home it is all worth it. That's why I believe it is important for everyone to get educated and learn a few things about fire safety to not only protect their families but others in the community as well!
On average 7 people die in a home fire every day, cooking is the leading cause of home fires, 40% of fires start in the kitchen.
Fire Prevention Week
Fire Prevention Week was started to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire that happened in 1871. Every year a week is dedicated to teaching the public about fire prevention. There is a new theme every year that the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) focuses on and this year is all about Kitchen Fires so here are a few facts that might just surprise you:
- Two of every five home fires start in the kitchen
- Ranges accounted for 58% of home cooking fire incidents. Ovens accounted for 16%
- On average, there are 32 home candle fires reported per day
- Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half
- Almost three-quarters of Americans do have an escape plan; however, more than half never practiced it
How can you help get involved with Fire Safety Week?
- Have a home safety plan and safe meeting place just in case there is a house fire and everyone gets separated
- Take a tour of your local fire department
