It’s always hard when the table turns, and you begin to have to look after your parents. All your life your parents have worried and helped you, and now it’s time to repay the favor. So many elderly people are living independent lives at home. But they could sometimes do with extra help to ensure they stay safe and healthy. Here are some signs they could do with extra help!
They are struggling to move around
One sign that your elderly parent could do with extra help is if they are struggling to move around. If you notice they are having difficulty to walk, you might need to look into getting them some help. You could consider getting a mobility scooter so that they can get out and about without having to walk far. Ask them if they are in any pain, as there may be something more serious going on with their body. You may need to look into getting them a wheelchair or some home help, if they are struggling to move around their home.
They are putting themselves in danger when driving
Another sign they could do with extra help is if they keep putting themselves into dangerous situations when driving. If you find they are having accidents in their car regularly, you might want to talk to them about stopping driving so they can stay safe. You could look into some senior companion care who will be able to chauffeur your loved one. They could take them grocery shopping, to see friends, and to go to appointments. That way, they can keep safe while still getting out and about.
They are not eating properly
They could also do with extra help if you notice they aren’t eating properly. It’s so important they are eating a healthy diet full of essential nutrients which will ensure they stay healthy for longer. Therefore, if you see they are eating a poor diet, you need to make sure they have extra help. As we talked about previously, you should go shopping with them so they know what they should be buying. You could also help prepare meals for them, or you could hire someone to deliver meals to them. You could set up an online shopping account for them so that you know exactly what food they will be eating.
They aren’t paying their finances
Another sign that your parents could do with extra help is if they aren’t paying their finances properly. If you notice that they have piles of bills they aren’t paying, it’s a sign that they aren’t keeping on top of it. As this article reveals, unpaid bills could be a sign that your parent is starting to suffer from dementia. Talk to your parent about why they aren’t paying the bills, and take over their finances if they are getting into financial debt.
Remember to make sure your parent is looking after their personal hygiene. If you feel like they are struggling to take care of themselves, it could be time to look into home or residential care.
