For parents, birthday parties are fun to throw but when kids become teenagers it can be difficult to come up with creative ideas that don't break the bank. Once your kids have reached the age where character cakes and party clowns just don't cut it anymore, you can turn to the great outdoors for a unique and exciting party venue.
Playoff Their Interests
Is your teen an athlete or an outdoor enthusiast? Pick something they already like to do and turn it into a group activity for their next birthday. Do they like to ride their bike? Coordinate transportation for a group to ride a trail together. Is your teen a tennis player? Have a local pro give the group a lesson and then let them spend the day practicing their new skills. Take the interests your teen already has and find a way to create a special experience for them and their friends.
Set Them Free
Picnics are the perfect way to get outside. Pick a venue that has a lot of different activities available. Local parks commonly have basketball courts, tennis courts, walking/running trails, playground equipment, and even places to swim. Pick a place and set them free for the day. Your teen and their friends can decide what kind of mood they are in. Busy friends can also come and go as they please, allowing more people to get involved. All you need to bring is the pile of outdoor game equipment from your garage and an ice box full of food and drinks for everyone to stay energized.
Scavenger Hunt
For older teens who can drive, scavenger hunts are a lot of fun. Plan clues that send them to different places around town. Structure the hunt like The Amazing Race so you know there is an adult to check in with them at each checkpoint. You can make this extra fun by giving them all customized t-shirts to feel like a part of the group. The final clue should lead them back to a home base for cake and party food. With this idea, you can throw a party for almost nothing other than some snacks, teamwork, and creativity.
Teens can be hard to please, so look to their natural interests and play off ideas that you know they will enjoy. With the right idea, outdoor parties can be fun, unique, and cost you next to nothing.
