Common Factors Affecting How People Take Cannabis Edibles

By Laura CyraFebruary 8, 2025No Comments5 Mins Read

Eating cannabis-infused edibles is a popular way for people to use the drug. It can take up to an hour for the effects to kick in, but they last longer than smoking or vaping. Recreational users cited convenience and social acceptability as reasons to use edibles. Medical patients used them to avoid the odor associated with smoking or inhalation.

    Flavor

Cannabis edibles are a popular method of ingestion, but there is much to learn about these products before trying them. They vary in potency, onset time, and effects. They also require careful labeling to ensure consistency and safety. The onset time of edibles depends on several factors, including the food consumed with them and your metabolism. Typically, edibles take 30-60 minutes to begin working. Ingesting them on an empty stomach can speed up onset times. Edibles that contain a higher concentration of THC or CBD will work faster than those with lower concentrations.

Unlike inhaled marijuana, edibles do not introduce as high a level of cannabinoids to the bloodstream. Moreover, they are less likely to cause a soothing effect. Lastly, they have no odor, making them more discrete than smoking or vaping. Edibles are infused with the psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and the non-psychoactive cannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD). THC causes feelings of euphoria and relaxation, while CBD has anti-anxiety effects. Before making cannabis edibles, the ingredients must be decarboxylated to activate the cannabinoids and make them available for your body to absorb. This process usually occurs with heat, so edibles made at home are often more effective than dispensaries. Nonetheless, legal edibles are a great option for those who want to enjoy the benefits of cannabis without risking the side effects of inhalation.

    Dosage

The dosage of cannabis edibles is crucial for a safe, effective experience. First-time users should always begin with a low dose and allow the effects to take effect before taking more. It is particularly important if the product is homemade because it is difficult to evenly distribute a specific amount of cannabis oil or butter into each bite. Even expert edible makers often find that their products vary in potency, with some parts containing more cannabinoids than others. It is best to use a lab-tested cannabis oil or tincture.

Unlike smoking or vaping, which takes just 20 minutes to feel the effects of THC, it can take much longer for edibles to kick in. The THC has to be absorbed through the digestive tract and metabolized by the liver, which can take up to two hours. Despite the longer onset time, edibles' effects can last up to an hour. Ingesting too many edibles can produce an uncomfortable and unpleasant psychoactive high. It can cause paranoia, anxiety, nausea, and sedation. It is also recommended to avoid consuming edibles with alcohol, as it can increase the intoxicating effects of THC. Alcohol slows down the body's ability to break down THC and allows it to enter the bloodstream more quickly, increasing the chance of an adverse reaction.

    Potency

The medicinal benefits of the cannabis plant can be experienced through cannabis edibles. They can be made at home or purchased from a licensed dispensary. The most common cannabis edibles include cookies, gummies, and hard candy. They are available in a variety of flavors and concentrations. Some are high in CBD and low in THC, while others are the opposite. In either case, reading the label and following dosage instructions is important. Too much edible may lead to unwanted side effects, especially for novice users.

The potency of cannabis edibles is measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This method measures UV absorbance, which is associated with specific molecules. The THC and CBD values listed on the packaging of cannabis products are based on this measurement. However, it is important to note that the HPLC method does not necessarily determine stability. Cannabis has many different chemical compounds, each with varying psychoactive properties. It's a challenging product to analyze. In addition, cannabis is used in various applications, including smoking, edibles, and oils. As a result, it requires a more complicated analysis than pharmaceuticals. To accurately measure the potency of an edible, it is necessary to use a precise HPLC analysis method. This method uses a detector capable of measuring UV light absorbance at a specific wavelength. THC and CBD are only two of the many metabolites that the sensor can detect.

    Shelf Life

As with any food, cannabis edibles have a shelf life. These products will degrade and lose their potency over time if left unattended. However, you can take steps to extend your gummies' lifespan and ensure they stay fresh. First, consider your edible and how long it takes for its effects to kick in. Typically, it takes about an hour for edibles to kick in, but this can vary depending on the gummy itself and the individual's metabolism. Store your gummies in a cool, dark place for the longest shelf-life. Also, look for airtight packaging. Polypropylene bags are known to prevent oxygen from entering the bag, which can increase your edibles' shelf-life.

Other factors that affect an edible's shelf-life include heat and light, which accelerate degradation. Exposure to light and heat can also cause THC to break down and convert to CBN, which reduces its psychoactive effects. It's important to keep your edibles in the dark, cool place and avoid excessive exposure to light. If you're buying a professionally made edible, it should have a clear expiration or best-by date on its packaging. This data will help you decide whether the edible is safe to consume and its THC content has degraded. For the best results, stick to the manufacturer's recommended shelf-life guidelines.
