What is Montessori? 5 Things For Parents to Know

“Montessori” is a common word heard in parental circles these days. But what exactly is it?

Montessori is a child-centered educational approach developed by Dr. Maria Montessori that focuses on the development of a child’s individual learning style, interests, and capabilities within an environment that encourages exploration and discovery. Here are five key things for parents to know about Montessori before you engage your child in this learning style.

The Great Outdoors: 5 Fun Activities for Fathers and Sons

    Respect for Nature

Montessori believes that nature can be used as an effective teaching tool. It advocates the use of natural materials such as plants, soil, rocks, and other outdoor elements to help teach children about their environment. In addition, Montessori encourages activities such as gardening, bird watching, and nature walks to help spark a deeper appreciation of the environment among its students. By involving children in hands-on experiences with nature, Montessori helps to ensure that future generations understand the importance of caring for and preserving the planet.

    Creative Thinking

Children are encouraged to think creatively through activities such as art, music, storytelling, drama, and creative play. In the Montessori classroom, students are encouraged to use their imagination and explore different ways of approaching tasks to foster creative thinking. This helps students develop the skills needed for abstract thought and problem-solving.

    Hands-On Learning

By using a hands-on approach to learning, children are allowed to explore different materials by touching and manipulating them with their hands. Children engage with real objects such as blocks, puzzles, and artwork that allow them to interact actively with their surroundings. This helps them gain a better understanding of their environment and the world around them. With this type of learning, children can develop lifelong skills that will benefit them well into adulthood.

    Self-Directed Learning

Montessori encourages each student’s independent exploration of topics that interest them by providing guidance, but allowing them to take the lead. This promotes self-confidence, autonomy, and a sense of accomplishment as they discover new things on their own.

By providing an environment with interesting materials and activities, as well as supportive guidance, teachers promote exploration and curiosity. Students have the freedom to pursue their interests at their own pace, developing problem-solving skills and self-assurance in the process. This approach encourages students to be proactive and intrigued by the world around them.

    Development of Skills

Skills are important no matter anyone’s age. That’s why Montessori focuses on developing essential skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving through activities such as group projects and individual assignments. These skills help prepare students for success in school and beyond.

With Montessori-based learning, every child is unique and has something to offer the learning environment. Montessori strives to provide an innovative educational experience that gives students the chance to develop their full potential while having fun at the same time.
