Wondering which supplies you’ll need to invest in before bringing home a new puppy for the first time? There are several essentials you’ll absolutely need to buy. There are also a few optional but nice-to-have items that you might want to consider purchasing before bringing your new family member home.
Dog Food and Water Dishes
You’ll need to give some consideration to what you’ll feed your new puppy. It’s possible to feed your puppy certain human food, however, most puppy owners choose to purchase commercially prepared pet foods that are enriched with the specific nutrients a puppy needs for optimum growth. If you aren’t sure which dog food to purchase for your puppy, it’s wise to consult with your veterinarian for a professional recommendation.
You’ll also need bowls or dishes for serving the food and water to your puppy. It’s also a good idea to purchase a mat to place underneath the bowls for easier tidying up after your pup’s meals.
A Comfortable and Supportive Dog Bed
Dogs are capable of sleeping wherever they want to, so a dog bed is not strictly a necessity. However, it is highly beneficial to have a dog bed available so your dog has a familiar and comfortable place to sleep.
You’ll want to consider several factors when choosing a bed for your new pup. The first thing to take into consideration is the dog’s size and weight. You’ll need a larger and more durable bed for a big breed like a German shepherd or a Labrador retriever. You can get away with buying a much smaller and lighter-weight bed for smaller dogs.
To choose the right dog bed, consider how large your puppy will eventually be when fully grown. Then purchase a bed that could accommodate the grown dog. Also, be sure to allow enough space for your canine pal to move around; it’s ideal to allow for at least a few extra inches in each direction.
A Collar and Leash
You will need a reliable system for constraining your puppy, and the best way to do this is by using a collar and leash together. These are both essential purchases for puppy owners.
Some of your best options for dog collars include head collars, flat collars, and martingale collars. There are also flea and tick collars available. Dog training experts recommend avoiding the use of choke collars, prong collars, and other similar collars that can cause dogs to feel pain when they start to pull on their collar. This is because it is far more effective to train a dog by rewarding the dog’s desired behaviors rather than punishing the dog for bad behaviors. A choke collar provides negative reinforcement, which is largely ineffective for dog training.
There are many types of leashes available to consider. Some of your choices include retractable leashes, flat lead leashes, rubber bungee-style leads, gentle leaders, and harness leaders. If you have an extremely strong dog, a gentle leader can be helpful in keeping it under control. It may also be easier to walk your dog using a harness instead of just their collar.
These are not the only things you might want to get for your new pooch. You could also consider making some additional purchases like dog treats, bones, and toys that will provide enjoyment for your canine friend. However, the items mentioned above are the most important essential supplies you need before bringing home a new puppy.

Nice checklist and I also did the same when I brought my pug home 7 years back. Among all these I set up a very warm and comfortable bed for him but he seldom uses that bed, for him the best place to sleep are my slippers. Not only mine, slippers of any of my family members would do 🙂
