Achmelvich Beach – Northwest Highlands
Located in the far northwest of Scotland, Achmelvich Beach is often described as one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. This pristine white sand beach sits at the end of a small bay surrounded by rugged cliffs. The turquoise waters are crystal clear and make for excellent swimming during the summer months. It feels wonderfully remote and unspoilt. There are great opportunities for wildlife spotting too – look out for seals, otters, seabirds and maybe even dolphins or whales offshore. It’s a great place to take children if you are fostering in Scotland.
Sandwood Bay – Sutherland
Sandwood Bay in far northern Scotland is another contender for the title of Scotland’s most beautiful beach. This remote 1.5 mile expanse of pinkish sand backed by rolling sand dunes looks like something from a tropical paradise. The only way to reach it is via a 4-mile hike from the nearest road, meaning you'll likely have it all to yourself mid-week. Brave the chilly waters for a refreshing dip or simply sit back and soak up the unbelievable views. Just be aware there are no facilities here.
Lunan Bay – Angus
Lunan Bay on the east coast is a fantastic family beach. This 2 mile stretch of clean golden sand feels like the Caribbean, with its swaying palms, grassy dunes and turquoise surf. The small village of Lunan backs onto the beach, so there are toilets and a great beach cafe serving fresh local seafood. The beach is very popular with surfers thanks to its waves. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round. It’s also a top spot for dolphin sightings.
Gullane Beach – East Lothian
Just 20 minutes from Edinburgh, Gullane Beach is a favourite seaside escape for city dwellers. Its sweeping 2-mile expanse of golden sand and grassy dunes make you feel like you’re miles from anywhere. The beach is very family-friendly, with fun splash zones for kids, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and an 18-hole golf course nearby. There are also plenty of cafes and ice cream shops in the village.
Luskentyre Beach – Isle of Harris
The Isle of Harris off Scotland's west coast has some incredible beaches, with Luskentyre being one of the finest. The white sand shore seems to stretch forever, with the ocean on one side and green hills rising behind. Take an afternoon stroll as far as you can, admiring the Caribbean-like vistas. Harris also has excellent local seafood if you fancy a beach BBQ. Just beware the water is very chilly!
