How to Treat and Prevent Varicose Veins

By Laura CyraMarch 4, 20164 Comments3 Mins Read
Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

Varicose veins develop primarily in the legs as a result of too much pressure on the veins throughout the lower body. When the blood in the lower body is unable to properly circulate and make its way back up to the heart, pressure builds up and the veins are weakened. This results in the unsightly appearance of veins that are blue or purple in color and that bulge above the surface of the skin, often looking twisted as well.

How to Treat and Prevent Varicose Veins

How can you prevent varicose veins, and how can you treat them if you have them? Continue reading to learn more.

How to Prevent Varicose Veins from Occurring

Bear in mind that not all varicose veins can be prevented, especially if you have a genetic predisposition towards developing them. Nevertheless, there are steps that you can take to reduce the odds that they will occur.

A good place to start is by increasing your physical activity level. Exercising regularly will help keep you in shape and allow you to maintain a healthy weight. Also, exercise improves circulation, vein strength, and leg strength.

Because varicose veins can develop in the legs of those who are overweight or obese because there is too much pressure on the lower body, maintaining a healthy weight is a great way to prevent them. If you are overweight, consider following a diet and exercise plan that will help you slim down. Avoid excess salt intake and get plenty of fiber.

Avoid putting excess pressure on your legs. This means getting up and moving around if you have been sitting for a while, and sitting down to rest if you have been standing for a while. It also means avoiding crossing your ankles or legs while you are seated or lying down.

Elevating your legs on a regular basis will also help bring the blood back towards the heart. This is a great way to rest, and it will help reduce pressure in the lower body.

Finally, you can wear support stockings. Also avoid clothes that are too tight and constrict your legs, groin, and waist. And do not wear high heels for extended periods either; instead, stick with lower heels or flats.

    Home Treatments for Varicose Veins

Some of the ways to prevent varicose veins listed above can also be used as home treatments if you end up developing varicose veins. Again, it is all about reducing the amount of pressure in the lower body so that the blood can flow more freely.

    Modern Treatments for Varicose Veins

In addition to the home treatments and preventative measures listed above, you can also consult a vascular doctor who specializes in the removal of varicose veins. There are a variety of non-invasive, modern, effective treatments that you can choose from. Your doctor will properly assess you and determine what treatment is best, whether that is laser therapy, sclerotherapy, radio frequency occlusion, or phlebectomy.

As you can see, there are many ways to not only prevent, but also treat varicose veins, so do not lose hope if you have been diagnosed with them.

I didn’t know varicose veins were a problem with circulation. I can see how veins could be more stressed in the legs of older individuals. I hear compression stockings can help with varicose veins, but it’s probably advisable to use them at the direction of a doctor.
