How Mothers Can Age Gracefully and Healthily

Aging causes a lot of physiological changes, from fine lines to a decrease in muscle mass. While everyone ages in their own individual way, there are general differences in how men and women age. For instance, in regards to brain aging, men’s cognitive impairment is caused more by pre-existing conditions like diabetes. Meanwhile, women will likely suffer from cognitive impairment due to a lack of strong social networks.

Another difference is that women have a longer life expectancy, and are also more likely to become centenarians than men. In order to live to a good age, it’s important that you remain healthy. Below are a few tips you can do to ensure that you age well:

Pay attention to nutrients in your diet

With the physiological changes you’re undergoing, you should also adjust your diet accordingly. For instance, women are more likely to have osteoporosis, so consuming a lot of calcium will help reduce your chances of experiencing it. However, you absorb less calcium as you age, and your ability to tolerate dairy decreases as well. Because of this, additional good sources of calcium are dark leafy greens. Loss of muscle mass is another change as you age, but you can reduce the impact of this by eating more protein. Aside from getting meat-based calcium, you can also consume more soy, eggs, and beans.

    Exercise Your Brain

Think of your brain as a muscle — you need to use it to keep it in good shape since too much brain inactivity will kill off neurons. This will cause cognitive issues, such as memory loss and language problems. Fortunately, you don’t need to pay for the brain-training programs you see today. There are simple ways to keep your mind sharp and healthy. These include solving puzzles, playing music, and reading a book. Taking up a new hobby is also helpful since it teaches you new skills, whether it’s learning a new language or how to cook new recipes. Brain activity boosts processes that keep individual brain cells in shape and stimulates communication among them.

    Have Regular Check-ups

Women are more prone to certain medical conditions, such as bone problems, breast cancer, and dementia. Because of this, having regular check-ups gives you peace of mind concerning your health. With breast cancer, for instance, screening tests can detect cancer early on — when it’s most responsive to treatment, so you can nip problems in the bud before they get worse. Women should schedule mammograms every one or two years, so doctors can identify and treat any abnormalities present. Other check-ups that women should undergo include pap tests, osteoporosis screenings, and general physical exams so doctors can look after any other conditions that may emerge as they age.

    Stay Social

Women are more prone to mental health problems like depression, and this can be the result of different factors such as hormonal changes and health problems. However, a way to help alleviate depression is to be socially active. There are many activities that can help you be social, such as spending time outdoors. Aside from spending time with family, you can also meet with your friends. If you’re still capable, volunteering also allows you to socialize with others. If you have hobbies, you can find a community of like-minded individuals and do that activity together.

Growing older means you gain maturity, wisdom, and experience. And if you age gracefully and healthily, you’ll also have the additional benefits of spending more time with your loved ones and making more memories together.
