5 Tips To Prepare For Your Child’s Wisdom Teeth Removal

By Friends of Real MommaNovember 6, 20236 Comments3 Mins Read

While parents will walk their children through numerous experiences in life, the wisdom tooth removal process can be a daunting one. This is the case for many reasons, including the fact that your child may be extremely nervous or even frightened about it. Nevertheless, there are several tips you can implement to ensure that the wisdom teeth removal process goes as smoothly as possible. Here are five of them:

    1. Prepare Yourself

While many parents focus on preparing their child to have her or his wisdom teeth removed, it's important to remember that self-care is important. Making appointments with the dentist, scheduling a school absence, taking time off from work, and dealing with your child's anxiety and fear can be draining. As such, be sure that you prepare yourself in a manner that precludes you from succumbing to the stress that can result from the situation. Some preparation strategies you can implement include meditating and journaling throughout the ordeal. This can help you maintain your mental equilibrium.

    1. Take Them to a Pediatric Dentist

Be sure that you don't take your child to a general dentist. Rather, ensure that she or he is seen in a practice that has a specific component of the company set aside for pediatric care. This step is important because the adult dental setting can oftentimes seem scary and cold. On the other hand, a pediatric unit will oftentimes incorporate fun toys and exciting imagery that stimulates the child's imagination and keeps her or him in a pleasant, positive mood while waiting to be seen by the dentist.

    1. Introduce Your Child To The Dentist Beforehand

Another strategy you should implement to prepare your child for the wisdom teeth removal process is introducing her or him to the dentist beforehand. This technique will empower your child by ensuring that she or he feels familiar with an individual who will be a part of the dental procedure. Do all that you can to ensure that your child and the dental professional establish and maintain good rapport.

    1. Prepare Something Special Afterwards

Although your child may feel anxious at the thought of having teeth pulled, reminding them that they will receive some type of prize, gift, or reward afterwards can mitigate this stress. There are a wide range of things that you may be able to do with your child, including going to their favorite toy store and purchasing the figurine they've wanted for the past several months.

    1. Discuss The Procedure With Your Child

Sometimes simply explaining the wisdom tooth removal process to your child can help her or him by demystifying the procedure. You may want to use brochures or pictorial materials to show your child exactly what will happen. This way, your young girl or boy won't be shocked and horrified when they see things like sharp, shiny dental equipment. Help them understand the importance of the operation.

If your child is preparing to have their wisdom teeth removed, it's important to help ensure that the experience is as smooth and seamless as possible. Utilize these preparation tips outlined above. And don’t forget to have your camera ready for any priceless post-surgery reactions!

Don’t remove more than one tooth at once unless your dentist strongly advises you to do so. I had two teeth removed on the same day and it was way more awful after!

I have been planning to bring my child to a dentist because she’s been complaining about a toothache. I agree with you that she must be taken to a pediatric dentist, and it’s great to know that most of them will offer toys and exciting imagery to the kids. I agree with you that it will be best to introduce her to the dentist before the procedure, so she will be familiarized with the process.
