What Issues Can Poor Eye Care Cause?

When dealing with general healthcare, the eyes often get overlooked, even though they are something that we need to ensure the best quality of life possible. It is estimated that of people aged 45 and over, around a sixth will experience eye problems that affect their vision. As the risks increase as you get older it is important to do everything you can to prevent your vision from deteriorating.

What issues can poor eye care cause?

    Taking care of your eyes

One of the first things you should do is visit an optician on a regular basis. Regular eye exams will help to identify any problems or potential problems and give you the opportunity to have treatment or take preventative steps to deal with it. Your optician will also be able to identify if you are at risk for eye problems by discussing your family history with you. For example, is high blood pressure or diabetes an issue in your family? If so then that could put you at risk as well.

A regular eye exam is also important if you spend long hours working on a computer. You could find that you are suffering from computer vision syndrome, a condition that encompasses a whole range of eye problems. The strain of staring at a computer screen for a long time day after day can bring on long-term vision problems, but this strain can be easily corrected if caught early enough for most people.

It is a good idea to protect your vision as much as possible. For example, during the day you should take the precaution of wearing sunglasses that offer 100% protection from UV light. This can reduce the possibility of eye problems such as cataracts. Add to this a healthy diet that brings plenty of antioxidants in order to also nutritionally supporting your sight.

The effects of poor eye health

Headaches are one of the main indicators of poor eye health. This is caused by the strain on the eyes and in many cases can be helped with the right glasses. There are also a number of eye conditions that can have a long-term impact on your vision. Cataracts, for example, gradually reduce vision but are easily treatable with minor surgery. Glaucoma is a much more serious condition and if left untreated can lead to blindness as it means that there has been damage to the optic nerve. Macular degeneration is another condition that worsens over time and affects mainly older people.

There are plenty of ways that people can improve their vision, and now conditions like poor vision can be corrected with the help of laser eye surgery. A visit to a Lasik practice in Toronto can be very beneficial as it can explain all the various options for achieving better sight.

Do not underestimate the importance of taking care of your vision. Some damage to your eyes can be reversed but not all of it can, so prevention is definitely better than cure in most cases. The good news is that basic eye care is actually very simple and may only mean a few minor changes to your daily routine.
