The Perfect Breakfast: 10 Things to Put on Your Toast When Looking for a Breath of Fresh Air

Toast is the perfect breakfast ingredient. It's fast and simple to make, and tossing a slice into the toaster doesn't require any prep work. However, eating the same buttered toast each morning can get a bit mundane. Try these ingredients to add a bit of flavor to your morning toast:

    1. Garlic

Who can eat spaghetti without a slice of Garlic Bread? This spice complements a variety of foods, including tomatoes, shrimp, beef, and all types of pasta. Making garlic toast is easy, too. Just butter a slice of crusty toast, and smear plenty of garlic and salt on top.

    2. Hummus

Hummus and hot bread are a dream team. This creamy spread is especially delicious on toasted flatbread, such as pita or laffa. Both are Middle Eastern favorites. While hummus tastes great alone, you can also dress it up with sliced beets and a sprig of fresh mint.

    3. Avocado

Contrary to popular belief, avocado toast isn't just for millennials. People of all ages can enjoy this easy-to-make, highly nutritious treat. Avocados are high in healthy fats and B vitamins. Simply spread some fresh avocado slices on toast and salt to taste. You can also add garlic, cayenne pepper, or a bit of mayonnaise. Try sourdough, rye, or pumpernickel bread for an unforgettable flavor explosion.

    4. White Beans

Do you have a pot of leftover white beans? Try mashing the beans and serving them on toast for a quick, hearty meal. Drizzle a bit of olive oil and garnish with thyme to give these otherwise bland beans a new, tastier flavor profile.

    5. Goat Cheese

Herbed goat cheese is a true delicacy. It's glides onto freshly toasted bread effortlessly and is the perfect way to enjoy a fresh baguette. The creaminess of the cheese pairs well with the chewiness of the bread. Try taking this treat up a notch with some roasted grapes.

    6. Peanut Butter

Peanut butter toast is a classic. When you spread peanut butter on hot toast, it slowly begins to melt into all the nooks and crannies. The peanut butter sticks to the roof of your mouth only to be washed away by a glass of cold milk. Allergic to peanuts? You can still enjoy this timeless pairing with almond or sunflower butter instead of peanuts.

    7. Anchovy Butter

Do you have a tin of anchovies in your cupboard? Mash it with softened butter to make a flavorful spread. Anchovy butter is incredibly delicious on rustic, whole-grain toast. Vegans can also enjoy a similar flavor by replacing the anchovies with miso paste. Top with roasted peppers and thyme for a filling meal.

     8. Cream Cheese

Everyone knows cream cheese tastes fantastic on bagels, but you can also enjoy it on toasted sweet bread. Drizzle a bit of honey on top for a simple treat. If you want something savory, try covering a slice of cream cheese toast with sliced cucumbers, fresh dill, and a pinch of salt.

    9. Ricotta

Ricotta is perhaps the best-known dessert cheese. It's used in tiramisu and cheesecakes. However, you don't need a lot of time to throw together a yummy dessert using this specialty treat. Try spreading a thick layer of ricotta over freshly toasted sourdough, and don't forget the toppings. Figs, honey, and apricots will turn your ricotta toast into a mouth-watering sweet treat.

    10. Pickles and Butter

Surprisingly, the best toast toppings are some of the most basic. Pickles and butter are a perfect duo, and no, you don't have to be pregnant to crave it. The trick is to add enough butter to offset the sourness of the pickles. If you're a pickle connoisseur, try a few different combinations. Dill, sweet, and gherkin pickles are some of the most popular.

    Everything Tastes Great on Toast

Toast provides a neutral flavor, which is why it pairs so well with a wide range of ingredients. Try a few of the toppings and spreads above or create your own tasty toast recipes. Don't be shy about piling on a random assortment of foods. You might just discover a new favorite breakfast.
