If you're fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home-mom, consider yourself a lucky woman. Many moms, however, feel that there is still something missing in their lives, so it's worthwhile to consider pursuing a degree in music education. The great news is that you can continue the majority of your education while still at home tending to your children.

    Benefits of Teaching

When you choose this type of career, it has many benefits. The hours typically allow you to have enough time to still be a mother and a professional. Another great reason is that most teachers have the summers available to spend time with their children. Although education has come under scrutiny lately, it is still a good paying profession. Better yet, you get to continue working with children on a daily basis and get paid.

    Even More Education

Once you've completed your bachelor's degree, you may want to think about getting your master's degree in music education. Once you obtain this degree, you will usually make more money teaching, and you'll have an advanced knowledge of the necessity of music in education.

    Obtaining Your Degree

With the internet available, you have more options than ever to complete your training. With the exception of student teaching, you can likely complete all of your courses online. There are also hybrid opportunities. This basically means that you take some courses at the college and some online. Yet another option may be self-guided instruction. This is asynchronous learning. You are given the information you need to complete the work and turn it in at the completion date.

    Financial Assistance

Depending on many factors, you may be able to receive substantial funding to offset the cost of your education. Some ideas to consider are:

    • Scholarships
    • State, local, and federal grants
    • Low-interest loans
    • National program assistance

Scholarships and grants do not have to be repaid. There are many foundations that offer national program assistance for people entering the field of music education. The loans will need to be paid back, so it's important to do your homework before accepting any loan.

Stay-at-home-moms can have the best of both worlds. You can still spend the time to raise your children, but also improve your personal success in the working world. Few things are more challenging than raising children, so you can get your degree if you're committed to working hard and stay organized.
