I am back on track with my diet and exercise routines after the holidays. I wouldn't exactly call it a diet though because I am more focused on eating healthy, drinking more water and being conscious about what I put into my body. Basically just making good choices! Part of my good choices are cutting out sodium.
I was shocked at how much sodium is in many items I was purchasing at the grocery store from taco seasoning mix to chickpeas. I'm sure a lot of you are just like me and want to find ways to EASILY replace items you keep on hand and save on additives and sodium. You can also save a lot of money by purchasing spices in bulk as well as dried beans and other staples.
This week I'm sharing my quick and easy taco seasoning mix recipe.
Quick and Easy Taco Seasoning Mix Recipe
- 1 tbsp Chili Powder
- 1 1/2 tsp Cumin
- .5 tsp Salt (optional I usually omit)
- 1 tsp Black Pepper
- 1/2 tsp Paprika
- 1/2 tsp Corn Starch
- 1/4 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/4 tsp Onion Powder
- 1/4 tsp Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
- 1/4 tsp Oregano
- 1/4 tsp Brown Sugar (optional)
- 1/4 tsp Cayenne (optional but adds a little kick)
- Combine all ingredients stirring to ensure it is mixed well.
- Use dry ingredients in place of a package of taco seasoning mix adding 1/2 cup water for 1 lb of ground meat!
Did you know that a store bought package has about 420 mg of sodium? With a recommended daily intake of 2300 mg (according to the Mayo Clinic) the package contains almost 20% of that. Wow. Let's see if I can help you cut down on that a bit by creating your own quick and easy taco seasoning mix at home!
I love using this recipe in my slow cooker chicken taco soup!
