Getting back into a healthy eating routine means making better choices and preparing more food at home! For me having a healthy snack is the biggest challenge. I like to have something to munch on during the day or while watching television but try finding something that has wholesome ingredients, that’s the real challenge.
I have made it my mission to find the perfect snack that is satisfying, quick and easy to make as well as full of real ingredients.

Quick and Easy Homemade Hummus Recipe
- ½ cup dried chickpeas
- ¼ tsp baking soda (to prevent gas)
Step 1 – Rinse the chickpeas and place in pot full of water and the baking soda. Bring to boil on high heat, reduce to a low boil and cover for an hour.
Step 2 – Once finished remove from heat and strain the cooked chickpeas, setting aside to cool to room temperature. Don’t discard the water it is the secret ingredient to the creamiest hummus, set it aside!
- 1-2 cloves minced garlic
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp ground flax seed
- ¼ cup reserved chickpea water (possibly more)
Step 3 – Using food processor pulse chickpeas, then add salt, lemon, garlic, olive oil and ground flax. After thoroughly combined, slowly add the chickpea water you set aside. Keep adding water until you reach the desired consistency.
- Pinch of your favorite seasoning (mine is cayenne)
- Olive oil for drizzling
Step 4 – Pour the finished hummus into your serving dish. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with your favorite seasoning! I love cayenne it gives the hummus a little kick but paprika, sundried tomatoes and even nutritional yeast also make a great addition.
That’s all you have to do just add your Breton Bean crackers and veggies and you have a perfectly delicious and healthy snack! Just try not to eat it all in one sitting like we normally do.

Homemade hummus is one of my favourite meals! I always used canned chickpeas in the past, though. Will try cooking them up from dry now that I know how 🙂

Simple to do! You can also cook them in a slow cooker if you don’t have time to wait.
