With summer just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to plan some exciting family adventures. Especially after the year we've had, everyone is itching to get out and explore. If you’re looking for budget-friendly activities that the whole family will love, the Midwest offers a treasure trove of options just waiting to be discovered.

Keep the fun going between destinations with some engaging printable road trip games! Perfect for keeping the kids entertained and making the journey just as enjoyable as the destination. Here are some of my favorite stops for Midwest family road trip adventures. Let’s dive in!

    Midwest Family Road Trip Adventures

    Illinois: Beginning of Route 66

Kick off your summer road trip by exploring one of America's most famous highways, Route 66. Starting in Chicago, this iconic route stretches all the way to Los Angeles, California! Begin your journey in Chicago with a taste of deep-dish pizza and a visit to the historic “Begin Route 66” sign on Michigan Ave.

    Must-See Stops:

    • Lincoln Home and Tomb: History buffs will love visiting Springfield, just a three-hour drive from Chicago. Explore the life of Abraham Lincoln with stops at his home, tomb, and the Presidential Library and Museum.

    St. Louis: Budget-Friendly Family Adventures

Next on your route is St. Louis, Missouri. Known for the Gateway Arch, this city offers a week’s worth of amazing attractions, many of which are free!

    Family Favorites:

    • Saint Louis Zoo: Rated as one of the top zoos in the nation, admission is free, and the penguin exhibit is a must-see! Consider a membership for perks like train tickets.
    • Forest Park: Spend the day rollerblading, boating, or picnicking in this beautiful park.
    • St. Louis Science Center: Enjoy free admission to this engaging center full of exhibits for all ages.
    • Soulard Farmers Market: A weekend tradition for over 200 years, perfect for fresh produce and local goods.
    • Fitz’s Root Beer Factory and Blueberry Hill: Fun for the whole family with great food and nostalgic vibes.

    Center of North America

A unique stop about 150 miles from Bismarck, North Dakota, is Rugby, the geographic center of North America. This scenic and educational trip is perfect for a day outing. Feel adventurous? Visit both Rugby and Center, North Dakota, to compare claims to the title!

    Mount Rushmore and Beyond

Head south to the remarkable Mount Rushmore, just 30 miles from Rapid City, South Dakota. Marvel at the presidential faces carved into the mountain and enjoy the serene beauty of the area.

    Nearby Gems:

    • Deadwood: Just 45 miles from Rapid City, this historic town is famous for its Wild West past and annual events like the Sturgis Rally and Wild Bill Days, celebrating the life of Wild Bill Hickok with music, food, and fun activities.

    The Day the Music Died

Music lovers won’t want to miss a visit to Clearlake, Iowa, where a tragic plane crash took the lives of Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, and “The Big Bopper.” Pay tribute at the crash site, marked by Buddy Holly’s iconic glasses, and explore the Surf Ballroom, the trio’s last performance venue, restored to its original glory.

rock and roll hall of fame Ohio Midwest

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Round off your musical journey at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. While not as budget-friendly, it’s a worthwhile trip with interactive exhibits and displays celebrating music history. Plan for a multi-day visit to enjoy everything Ohio has to offer fully.

Are you ready for a road trip? The Midwest is full of hidden gems, from the gorgeous Saint Louis Zoo to delicious food at Blueberry Hill. Don't forget to download and print your favorite road trip games before you hit the road to ensure endless fun on your Midwest family road trip adventures.
