Daily Journaling – How to Get Started

By Laura CyraMarch 10, 20244 Comments4 Mins Read
Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

Have you considered starting a journal, but are not sure where to begin? Perhaps you've heard about the incredible benefits of daily writing and how it can positively impact your life. Whether it's overcoming stress, finding clarity, or just a desire to document your journey, now is the perfect time to incorporate journaling into your daily routine.

Daily Journaling - How to Get Started

As a busy Mom, your life is undoubtedly filled with a unique blend of responsibilities and experiences. Fortunately, starting a journal tailored to your preferences and comfort doesn't require fancy diaries or special pens. However, if colored pens and a special notebook add a touch of fun for you, go ahead and indulge!

Let's explore some tips that will not only help you kickstart your journaling journey but also make it a sustainable and enjoyable daily habit.

    Discover Your WHY

Before you dive into journaling, it's essential to identify your reasons for doing so. Having a clear purpose will keep you motivated, preventing the common pitfall of giving up after a few days. Your reasons could include reducing stress, coping with daily challenges, promoting healthy self-awareness, or simply organizing your thoughts.

You might have multiple reasons, and that's perfectly fine – the more, the better!

    Choose Your Journaling Style

Traditionally, journals are paper notebooks, but in our tech-filled world, you have various options. Whether it's writing in a document on your computer, using a mobile app, or sticking to the classic pen-and-paper approach, select the method that aligns with your lifestyle.

If you're a fan of lists or letters, handwriting in a journal might be ideal. However, if your schedule is hectic and you're always on the go, consider using something simple like the notes app on your phone.

    Set Realistic Expectations

Avoid overwhelming yourself when you start journaling. Begin with a manageable time commitment, such as 5-10 minutes a day. If that feels like too much, start with a few minutes and gradually increase as you establish a routine.

Don't pressure yourself to write at the same time every day – life happens. Whether it's in the morning, during lunch, or before bed, find a time that suits you best. It's okay to skip a day; mental exhaustion is real. Just pick it up again the next day.

    Stay Motivated to Write

Finding the motivation to journal regularly can be challenging, but with a few tricks, it can become an integral part of your routine.

    • Embrace Prompts: Use online prompts or invest in a guided journal to spark your thoughts when you feel stuck. Questions like “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” can guide your writing.
    • Make it a Habit, Not a Hobby: View journaling as a daily task rather than just a hobby. Treating it as an essential part of your routine helps you experience the benefits more quickly.
    • Set Reminders: If remembering to journal is a struggle, set alarms on your phone. Once it becomes a habit, you might not need reminders.
    • Change Your Surroundings: A change in scenery can rejuvenate your writing. Try different locations or times of the day to keep it fresh and inspiring.

Journaling can be a powerful and enjoyable practice, providing a valuable outlet for your thoughts and emotions. With these tailored tips, you'll find it easy to dedicate a small portion of your day to journaling, enhancing your overall well-being!

Daily journaling keeps me sane as a busy Mom. I can put my thoughts onto paper, even jotting down reminders for myself. I like to do a brain dump each night that helps me decompress after a busy day and prepare for the day ahead. However, you can work daily journaling into your life, just start!!
