Basic Eye Care: Top Tips To Protect Your & Your Family’s Eyesight

Protecting your eyesight is one of the most important things everyone should be doing, to maintain a good quality of life. While it will deteriorate through old age, there are certain measures that can be taken to protect it for as long as possible. Encourage your whole family to follow these tips, and make protecting their eyesight an essential part of their healthcare routine.

    1. Check for any eye diseases in the family history.

Many eye problems and genetic and hereditary, with some people much more prone to get them as others. Diabetes and high blood pressure make you much more likely to suffer, so be aware of any warning signs.

    1. Attend regular checkups.

As with any aspect of your health, you should attend regular appointments and checkups with experts. An eye care doctor will be able to diagnose earlier, which will limit any problems from progressing. It is advised that everyone attends check-ups at least every two years, but more often for young children.

    1. Eat to fuel your vision

What we put into our bodies is detrimental to most of our health. Nutrients such as zinc, vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin E can all help with age-related problems. Healthy eating and keeping your weight at a safe level are also vital in eyesight care. Obesity can lead to type 2 diabetes, which is the leading cause of blindness in adults.

    1. Ditch the cigarettes

The multitude of health problems have been well documented and shared, but smoking also affects your eyesight. People who smoke are much more likely to develop cataracts, optic nerve damage and other eye issues.

    1. Protection from the Sun

Wearing the right sunglasses will protect you from the damaging UV rays emitted from the Sun. UV exposure is another effect that can increase your risk of getting cataracts and macular degeneration. Try glasses that block out at least 90% of the rays, with polarised glasses ideal for driving. Buy fun and colorful choices to encourage kids to wear theirs.

    1. Ration screen time

An issue for many parents, but spending too much time staring at a computer or laptop screen can really affect children's eyesight. Try to limit them to only a couple of hours a day, and break this up with outside games and other activities.

For office workers, make sure you take regular breaks from your computer. The position of the screen can help as well, so ensure the top of the monitor is at eye level so that you don't have to look up at the screen. Use a supportive desk chair, keep your feet flat on the floor, and use anti-glare screens if required. Too much screen time can cause eye strain, blurry vision, headaches, and dry eyes.

Encouraging habits for the whole family to improve their health is vital. Teaching your children these from an early age means they will carry them into adult life, and be much more dependent and self-sufficient as they age.

Minimizing screen time is a good practice since you can give your eyes some rest from too much exposure to computer or other gadgets. Having the correct distance and eye level when working can also do a lot of tricks to protect the eyesight.

My daughter Olivia has been complaining that she’s experiencing headaches and blurry vision. I guess you’re right, regular checkups and appointments with experts must be done, too bad I was being careless regarding this matter. It’s best if I’ll start looking for a pediatric eye doctor that may run some thorough check-up on her eyes.
