Aging Parents? Family Strategies For Helping Them In Their Later Years

Aging Parents Family Strategies For Helping Them In Their Later Years

Sooner or later, all families must deal with the issue of aging parents and ensuring they receive the care they need as the years pass. A variety of options are available, including home care, assisted living and more comprehensive care for those with serious medical needs. Families must do a comprehensive assessment of the elder’s physical and emotional needs to provide the right degree of care, and they must also be ready to respond to changing needs as they occur.

    Aging at Home

Recently, more focus has been put on finding ways to assist elders who wish to “age in place” in their own homes. Home health care services can provide caregivers who can help with household chores, transportation to doctor appointments and ensuring that the elder takes their medications as prescribed. Meals On Wheel service can provide hot, nutritious meals for elders who can no longer cook for themselves.

    Senior Care Facilities

Some elders require a more interactive environment that puts them in contact with their peer group on a regular basis. In these cases, a group facility can be a better option, providing meals, laundry services, transportation for doctor visits and activities that help to promote a healthy body and mind. Individuals can choose from a range of care options for seniors, including independent living, assisted living that provides some daily care, memory care for those with dementia and skilled nursing care for seniors with medical issues.

    Independent Living

Some facilities, like Mari de Villa, offer a private apartment and the ability to care for oneself, but also ensure that assistance is available if the senior ever needs it. Many of these residential centers are also attached to “step up” services as the resident ages and needs more comprehensive care.

    Memory Care

For seniors who are dealing with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, memory care can provide more intensive services. Caregivers have greater experience in handling dementia patients and understand the problems involved including wandering, mood changes and other issues. They can ensure that residents take needed medication, eat a healthy diet and maintain proper grooming.

    Skilled Care

If the senior has serious medical issues or can no longer walk, eat or care for themselves without aid, the skilled care facility can provide these services with experienced caregivers who have knowledge of these issues.

A wide variety of options are available to help with eldercare services to help with the growing number of older adults. If you understand parents’ needs and do a little research, you can find the right kind of care to help them thrive.

Home care means that you or your loved one will receive care in the familiar surroundings of your own home. This could be hourly visiting care for a couple of hours a week, or it could be a more intensive level of live-in care, where a carer will be there around the clock.

While you’ll notice how comfortable and spacious your home is after an exterior remodel or expansion, you’ll practically be doing backflips at the end of the month. That’s because the numbers on your energy bill will likely be quite a bit lower than they were previously. And as is the case with a golf scorecard, lower numbers are definitely better.

Hello Laura. Thanks for sharing this round up of senior living options. When the time comes to start considering this, seniors and their caregivers need to know the options and which option is best for them. Often in my area, seniors start out in assisted living centers that have different areas with different levels of care. That way, they can stay in the same place if their conditions progress.
