7 Affordable Craft Ideas for Children

By Laura CyraApril 25, 2024No Comments3 Mins Read

Crafting with children is a wonderful way to spend quality time together while unleashing creativity. Children get to practice fine motor skills and problem-solving as they follow instructions and manipulate materials. The sense of accomplishment from completing a project also builds self-esteem. Best of all, crafts can be done with common household items, making them an affordable activity for families on a budget. These affordable craft ideas for children inspire easy yet engaging craft projects that children will love.

    Affordable Craft Ideas for Children

    1. Painted Rocks

Decorating rocks with paint pens or acrylic paints allows kids to turn ordinary stones into decorative objects. They can paint designs, creatures, faces, or words on smooth rocks collected from outside. These painted rocks make great paperweights, garden accents, or holiday ornaments. Let the kids' imaginations run wild!

    2. Homemade Playdough

Make playdough together using just a few simple ingredients like flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, and food colouring. Kids will have a blast mixing up the dough and choosing fun colours. Playdough builds hand strength and coordination. It also sparks pretend play as kids create shapes, buildings, animals, and more. Store-bought kits are expensive, so homemade playdough makes a thrifty alternative. For this activity, foster carers can buy supplies with their fostering allowance. All foster agencies, including orangegrovefostercare.co.uk, provide their foster carers with an allowance.

    3. Nature Collages

Collect leaves, flowers, acorns, pebbles, twigs, and other natural items on a walk. Then, use glue or Mod Podge to arrange them on paper, wood slices, canvas, or cardboard. Add cut-outs of birds, butterflies, dragonflies, or anything else you like. Families can collage together and then proudly display these masterpieces.

    4. Melted Crayon Art

For melted crayon art projects, peel the paper off old crayons and break them into pieces. Arrange the crayon bits in a muffin tin or silicone mould, then bake at 150°F until melted. Cool completely, then gently pop out the colourful crayon shapes. Kids will be amazed at how the crayons merge together in cool swirl designs. Use the melted wax to make rainbow scribble art, too.

    5. Handprint Cards

Fingerprints, palm prints, and painted handprints make darling designs for homemade cards. Fold construction paper in half and let kids dip their hands in paint or ink pads before pressing onto the front. They can add details like stems on the fingerprints to make flowers. Write heartfelt messages inside for beautiful keepsake cards.

    6. Paper Plate Masks

Turn inexpensive paper plates into cute masks. Decorate with crayons, washi tape, feathers, stickers, glitter glue, or fabric scraps. Add elastic string or a craft stick handle. Kids can wear their homemade masks for dress-up play, a parade, or a costume party.

    7. Homemade Bubbles

Make unbreakable bubbles using concoctions like dish soap, water, and corn syrup. Provide cookie cutters, straws, fly swatters, and ladles for bubble wand experiments. See who can blow the biggest bubbles! It's giggles guaranteed as the bubbles drift and pop.

Crafting engages children's minds and hands to provide fun learning experiences and treasured memories. The activities above call for basic, economical supplies found around the house or classroom. Simple instructions make them doable for kids of all ages to work on independently or alongside parents, teachers, and foster carers. Let the creativity flow as you craft together!
