Faulty Thermostat
The main problem is a thermostat that does not turn on at all. There are some thermostats that switch on and off, resulting in erratic fluctuations of the temperature. If the repairs do not work, an HVAC professional may tell you that you need a replacement.
Clogged Filter
If you're not circulating enough heat in the house, the problem could go beyond the thermostat. Check if the air filter is clogged. To avoid this problem, review and replace this filter at least once a year. Depending on its usage, you may need to replace it more often.
This statistic is from the EPA.
Reduced Airflow
A clogged filter is one cause of poor airflow, and so is a broken fan or motor. During winter, the coils could freeze or snow could block the air vents. A technician looks at all of these parts in order to improve air circulation.
Ignition problems
An electronic ignition failure is caused by a faulty wire, a dirty flame sensor or an open switch. When you cannot ignite the pilot, the heat does not turn on or turns on erratically. There could also be an underlying problem with your home's electrical system.
Insufficient Maintenance
Not maintaining your HVAC system is the main cause of any malfunction. A heater needs the same amount of maintenance that a car or house does. Replacing the filter is necessary to remove clogs that form inevitably on your heater. You need to check the other parts to prevent sudden breakdowns. Maintain your furnace once a year to avoid paying high energy repair bills.
Trying to fix heater problems yourself is time-consuming and could be a waste of time. In many repair scenarios, the problems cannot be fixed, and a professional has to make a replacement.

I find it worrying when you said that not enough heat is circulating around the house due to having a clogged air filter. When you said that, my tip when getting it replaced is to call a local maintenance company to do it for a household as soon as possible. Doing this will help them be aware of other defects in the unit and have it repaired in order to restore it back to full efficiency.
