With school out for the summer it might be a challenge to get your kids off the couch. Whether they're just being lazy or have tv programs and digital toys occupying their time it can be a struggle to motivate them to engage in active play. That's why I've put together a list of 4 types of toys to get the kids off the couch and outside using their imaginations.
Construction Toys
Construction based toys have long been a favorite of children young and old. Give any toddler a set of [easyazon_link keywords=”building blocks” locale=”US” tag=”reamom0b-20″]building blocks[/easyazon_link] and they will start stacking them up. Construction-based toys that ask children to think for themselves and use their imagination are wonderful tools to promote active play.

[easyazon_link keywords=”LEGO” locale=”US” tag=”reamom0b-20″]LEGO[/easyazon_link] is always a huge hit with children, particularly as parents can choose themed LEGO sets to match their child’s interests.
Exercise Toys
It sounds simple, but toys that promote exercise in children are becoming less and less popular.

[easyazon_link keywords=”Bicycles” locale=”US” tag=”reamom0b-20″]Bicycles[/easyazon_link], skateboards, roller skates and [easyazon_link keywords=”trampolines” locale=”US” tag=”reamom0b-20″]trampolines[/easyazon_link] are all wonderful toys for encouraging children to get up and be active!
Sports Toys
[easyazon_link keywords=”baseball” locale=”US” tag=”reamom0b-20″]baseball[/easyazon_link]When is the last time you went outside with your child to kick a [easyazon_link keywords=”football” locale=”US” tag=”reamom0b-20″]football[/easyazon_link], shoot some hoops or throw a baseball back and forth?

Sporting toys are not only excellent for getting children off the couch, but they allow the child to develop skills that transfer to inclusive play with other children, both in school and with their friends!
Arts and Crafts
Whether it’s drawing with [easyazon_link keywords=”crayons” locale=”US” tag=”reamom0b-20″]crayons[/easyazon_link], painting, playing with [easyazon_link keywords=”sand and water” locale=”US” tag=”reamom0b-20″]sand and water[/easyazon_link], or even baking in the kitchen with Mom, any kind of arts and crafts based play is a great way to stimulate creative thinking in children.

Have fun with the kids, set up a blanket on the lawn and grab a coloring book or two and enjoy being outside together. You can always paint rocks or get creative with [easyazon_link keywords=”sidewalk chalk” locale=”US” tag=”reamom0b-20″]sidewalk chalk[/easyazon_link].
